The Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) Research Grant Announcement

The Graduate School of Korean Studies in the Academy of Korean Studies is a research-oriented graduate institute established in 1980. We specialize in the fields of humanities and social sciences related to Korea with the aim of nurturing eminent scholars of Korean studies who would search for the essence of Korean culture and contribute to the advancement and globalization of Korean studies. About 240 students including 114 international students from 30 countries are currently enrolled in our master’s and doctoral degree programs, enjoying close one-to-one guidance by professors which our 1:4 faculty-student ratio enables.

The AKS (Academy of Korean Studies) Research Grant is one of our non-degree programs which invites and supports international students for six months to provide them with a momentum to grow to be a next generation of promising scholars in Korean studies and to play a leading role in the field abroad. Applications for the AKS Research Grant for the period from 1 March 2013 to 31 August 2013 are now being sought. Those who aspire to widen and deepen their knowledge by conducting research at our graduate school in one of the most dynamic countries in the world are very welcome to apply.

The International Academic Forum in conjunction with its global partners, is proud to announce the Third Asian Conference on Asian Studies to be held from May 24-26 2013, at the Ramada Osaka, Osaka, Japan.

Proposals can be submitted until February 1st, 2013.

The conference theme is “Intersecting Belongings: Cultural Conviviality and Cosmopolitan Futures” and the organizers encourage submissions that approach this theme from a variety of perspectives. However, the submission of other topics for consideration is welcome and we also encourage sessions within and across a variety of disciplines and fields related to Asian Studies, including the following streams:

Years of Radical Change: Conference on Korean Screen Culture

From the 1980s New Wave of South Korean directors to the big budget spectaculars of the 2000s, South Korean cinema is attracting worldwide attention like never before. The past few years have also seen an exponential growth in the popularity of South Korean screen culture in Asia and beyond. The recent ‘Korean Wave’ (hallyu) of television dramas (soap operas), cinema and popular music has generated a remarkable amount of interest in Korea and its ‘culture.’ North Korea also has a long-established cinematic tradition and is a rare example of a country that has been ruled by a filmmaker. In the wake of last year’s successful workshop on South Korean film, Years of Radical Change (1) held at SOAS, the Centre for Korean Studies in collaboration with the Centre for Film and Screen Studies will host a two-day conference that aims to examine critically some of the most important issues affecting Korean screen culture today; particularly cinema, television and music videos.

Le séminaire “Les sociétés coloniales en Asie 1850 -1950″ est organisé par l’Institut d’Asie Orientale et le Laboratoire de recherche historique Rhône-Alpes.

Centré sur la nouvelle question d’histoire contemporaine au programme du CAPES et de l’agrégation, il s’adresse à tous les agrégatifs des universités lyonnaises et de l’ENS et aux enseignants-chercheurs intéressés par le sujet.

Il réunit parmi les meilleurs spécialistes des sociétés coloniales de l’Asie, croisant l’histoire des empires français et britannique mais aussi japonais. Les intervenants alterneront études de cas et mises au point historiographiques sur le fait colonial.

Dans le cadre du séminaire de l’Institut d’Asie orientale (IAO), Lyon

Le séminaire de recherche de l’IAO vise à accueillir les chercheurs extérieurs au laboratoire et les chercheurs étrangers invités en résidence à l’IAO. Les séances du séminaire sont en général programmées le jeudi après-midi de 14h à 17h30. Le séminaire est ouvert à tout public impliqué dans la recherche, l’enseignement et l’étude de l’Asie. Le programme des séminaires est coordonné par François Guillemot et Laurent Gédéon.
