Program Outline

The KF provides financial support for efforts to create new professorships in the field of Korean studies and Korean language at various universities abroad that are equipped with the infrastructure necessary to maintain an adequate level of research and education on Korean studies and have future growth potential. Under this program, the KF funds the establishment and operation of two types of professorships: 1) the Tenure-Track Position, in which the support recipient university agrees to permanently maintain the position from its own resources after the termination of the KF’s support, and 2) the Endowment Chair position, in which the support recipient university operates a permanent professorship with the KF through a jointly created endowment fund.

Universities outside of Korea that plan to create new professorships in Korean studies/Korean language

Details of Support

  1. Tenure-Track Position (TTP): The KF provides up to 70% of the total amount of the salary* and employee benefits** for the TTP professor of Korean studies/Korean language to be hired by the support recipient university.

* Salary: the hired professor’s salary in accordance with the existing professor salary table of the support recipient university.

** Employee benefits: the non-wage payments, such as fringe benefits and social welfare expenses, that an employer is required to pay to his/her employees according to the laws and regulations of the state or country to which the support recipient university belongs.

  1. Endowed Chair Position: The KF provides an endowment on an annual basis during the grant period for the new establishment of a permanent professorship in Korean studies/Korean language, on the condition that the support recipient university provides a matching fund contribution of 50% on a dollar-for-dollar basis.

Three to five years

Prerequisites for the KF’s Support

This program aims to support universities that are willing to fund and maintain a newly established Korean studies professorship permanently from its own resources after the conclusion of the KF’s support, or through a jointly created endowment fund. In addition, the universities should ensure that the holder of the professorship will be appointed and promoted through a thorough and fair review of his/her qualifications and accomplishments in accordance with the university’s procedures for appointment, promotion, and tenure for faculty members.

Program Outline

The Korea Foundation provides financial support to universities abroad seeking to hire new contract faculty members (non-tenure track) with the goal of creating or expanding their Korean language or Korean studies program.

Eligible Applicants

Universities abroad which currently operate or plan to launch an educational/research program in Korean language or Korean studies

Eligible Areas

Korean studies (humanities or social sciences) and Korean language

Details of Support

The Foundation provides partial funding for the salary and compensation of a new faculty member in accordance with the existing professor salary table of the recipient university.

※ Housing expenses, salaries/compensation for assistants or secretaries, recruitment expenses, administrative expenses and other indirect or overhead expenses are not covered by this grant.

※ The support for the existing faculty member is not applicable for this program.

Program Outline

Under this program, the KF dispatches visiting professors of relevant fields to universities abroad that are planning to launch or expand Korean studies or Korean language courses but are currently experiencing difficulties in staffing their faculty with adequately qualified candidates.

Eligible Applicants

Universities abroad that currently operate or plan to launch an education and research program in Korean studies or Korean language.

Note: The university must make sure that the Visiting Professor provides courses according to the minimum requirements below:

  • Visiting Professor in Korean Language: At least 10 hours per week
  • Visiting Professor in Korean Studies: At least 2 courses per semester

Eligible Areas

Korean studies (humanities, social sciences) and/or Korean language

Period of Support

One to two years (Korean studies: One year / Korean Language: Up to two years)

Responsibilities of the Host Institution

  1. The host institution must assist with procedures for KF visiting professors to enter the country and other formalities such as the issuance of visas, resident certificates, and work permits.
  2. The host institution is responsible for providing KF visiting professors with housing, office/research space, a computer, and other items of office equipment.

Living allowance, round-trip airfare, travel insurance, etc.

① Nationwide search for qualified candidates will be undertaken from March to May 2021

② The KF will recommend one or two final candidates to the universities in June 2021

③ The KF visiting professors will arrive at the universities in August/September 2021 (depending on academic schedule)

Nous vivons un été 2020 bien particulier : l’évidence des voyages et la légèreté habituelle se trouvent mises à mal par les limitations des déplacements et les incertitudes liées à la crise sanitaire actuelle. Nous espérons que chacun d’entre vous a néanmoins trouvé un temps pour se reposer de cette période éprouvante. Cette crise affecte les activités du RESCOR, mais porte aussi une bonne nouvelle, puisqu’elle a permis d’obtenir une prolongation du projet jusqu’au 31 décembre 2020 !

Depuis plusieurs mois, les outils numériques sont mis au premier plan : le RESCOR ne fait pas exception, et a continué de développer son site Internet. Les ressources en ligne utiles aux étudiants ont fait l’objet d’un nouveau récapitulatif proposé par Marion Delarche, qui s’est également attelée à la mise en ligne de comptes rendus de conférences de l’EHESS rédigés par ses soins. Plusieurs collègues ont par ailleurs mis en ligne sur le site du RESCOR des ressources pédagogiques inédites : citons les très utiles Repères bibliographiques pour l’anthropologie de la Corée du Sud (en anglais et français) recensés par Florence Galmiche, et le minutieux travail de traduction collaborative de L’histoire du lettré Hô de Pak Chiwôn (1737-1805), mené conjointement par Pierre-Emmanuel Roux et ses étudiants de M2 en 2017-2018 et récemment publié sur le site du RESCOR après mise à jour et réécriture. Notre site se trouve en outre enrichi par les articles mis en ligne par Tak Seolmin, Gulsen Kilci et Marion Delarche : leurs efforts ont permis de porter le nombre de numéros de La Revue de Corée à plus de 600 articles consultables en ligne à ce jour. Merci à elles ! Ce travail important laisse espérer que nous pourrons terminer la mise à jour de La Revue de Corée, qui compte un peu plus de 700 articles, d’ici la fin de l’année.

Signalons également la publication, au format numérique, de l’Encyclopédie des Historiographies : Afriques, Amériques, Asies qui comporte plusieurs entrées sur la Corée coordonnées par Yannick Bruneton. Que les plus lassés des écrans se rassurent : il est désormais possible de parcourir les 1012 pages de cet ouvrage dans un format papier édité aux Presses de l’Inalco. Nous avons également le plaisir d’annoncer que le montage d’un documentaire franco-coréen sur le Jikji (직지直指) réalisé par Jérôme-Cécil Auffret, et dont Yannick Bruneton est co-auteur, vient d’être terminé.

En dépit des conditions difficiles, les jeunes coréanologues aussi poursuivent leur cheminement : c’est ainsi que Seo Miwon a soutenu avec succès sa thèse sur la mobilisation des femmes sud-coréennes atteintes d’un cancer du sein, le 6 mai dernier, en visioconférence. Nous lui adressons nos félicitations chaleureuses et lui souhaitons la réussite de ses projets à venir !

Les récentes activités témoignent une fois de plus du dynamisme du RESCOR. L’équipe en rédige actuellement le rapport final : il reviendra sur cinq années de collaborations fructueuses entre l’Université de Paris, l’Inalco et l’EHESS. The Academy of Korean Studies (AKS) is pleased to announce a call for applications for a webinar entitled “AKS Program for Textbook Specialists in Europe.” AKS, a South Korean government-funded research institution, is planning to hold a webinar in which lectures about various aspects of Korea including history, art, and contemporary society are delivered and participants will present and discuss relevant topics. This program is designed for educating secondary school teachers, textbook authors, and college or university professors at the undergraduate level who are interested in Korea.

On the first day of the program, prominent Koreanists will deliver lectures about Korean history, inter-Korean relations, and Korean art. On the second day, participants will give presentations on and discuss education on Korea in European schools and Korea-related textbook or educational materials.

*All participants must have a webinar compatible application (For example ZOOM).

■ Eligibility: Secondary school teachers, textbook authors, and college or university professors who:

– have an interest in teaching about Korea

Program Outline

The Korea Foundation (KF) provides support for a variety of Korea-related cultural exchange projects being implemented by organizations abroad as part of its efforts to promote understanding and friendship between Korea and other countries.

Eligible Applicants

∎ Overseas organizations implementing art or cultural programs

∎ Overseas universities with Korean studies centers or Korea-related
programs

※ Restrictions

– Applications from individuals will not be considered

– Eligible organizations can apply for only one project per year

– Korea-based organizations will not be considered

Project Period

∎ To be eligible for program support, proposed projects must be conducted between  January 1, 2021 and June 30, 2022.

Eligible Projects

∎ Performing arts events related to Korean music, dance, or theater

∎ Visual arts exhibitions that feature Korea-related paintings, calligraphy,

sculpture, photography, ceramics, installation and/or media art

∎ Lectures, workshops, and seminars on the performing/visual arts of Korea

∎ Projects designed to introduce Korean arts and culture through use of film,

video, and recordings

∎ Comprehensive projects that incorporate the above genres

※ Due to the outbreak of COVID-19, the KF is temporarily supporting virtual or contactless programs for Korean culture and arts.

 Ineligible Projects

– Projects for commercial gain or the promotional activities of certain

    individuals or organizations

 – Projects targeted at minority groups such as overseas Koreans

 – Projects implemented on a private (non-public) basis

 – Production of film, video, and recorded works

 – Projects that receive support from other Korean government

   organizations/agencies, such as the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism; Arts Council Korea; Korea Arts Management Service; Korean Culture and Information Services; and Overseas Koreans Foundation (no overlapping support)

 – Projects that received sponsorship support from the KF in the previous year  but were not actually implemented

Program Outline

The Korea Foundation (KF) provides support for overseas museums so that they can implement Korea-related exhibitions, public outreach programs on Korean arts and culture, one-day Korean culture events in conjunction with a special exhibitions, and a Visiting Curator Program, for the purpose of making Korean arts and culture more accessible to people around the world.

Eligible Applicants

∎ Overseas museums that:

1) propose to present a special exhibition and/or public outreach activites related to Korean arts and culture.

2) have a suitable collection of Korean artifacts/artworks (applicable to the Visiting Curator Program)

∎ To be eligible for program support, proposed projects must be conducted between January 1, 2021 and December 31, 2023.

The Korea Foundation’s Support for Policy-Oriented Research program furnishes grant support to research projects or programs that provide in-depth analyses of and policy recommendations on Korea and its relationship with other countries.

Eligibility

Research institutions, think tanks, or university-affiliated research institutions outside of Korea, except those in the U.S.*

Areas of Support

1. Policy research or seminars related to Korea

  Topic examples:

  – Issues related to the Korean peninsula: peacebuilding, non-proliferation, foreign affairs, national security, economics/trade, society, etc.

  – Cooperation on science and technology: digital transformation, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence (AI), 5G, etc.

  – Universal values: human rights, equality, environmental protection, democracy, civil society, job creation, health/welfare, etc.

2. Establishment of a Korea Fellow position which focuses on Korea-related research

Grant Coverage

Project expenses, researcher/staff salaries, indirect costs etc.

      – Coverage of indirect costs can be requested at an amount up to 10% of total direct costs.

       – Tangible assets are not covered.

Grant Period

The grant period is normally one year. However, multiple-year projects will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
